Israel Adesanya Defeats Yoel Romero To Defend His UFC Middleweight Title.
Nigeria-born mixed martial artist, Israel Adesanya (The Last Stylebender) on Sunday morning, creates history as he successfully defended his UFC middleweight title.
Isreal Adesanya emerged victorious against Cuba mixed martial artist, Yoel Romero in the main event of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) 248 division, by a frustrating unanimous decision at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Adesanya and Romero are two of the most dangerous fighters in the division. If that wasn’t clear going into the fight, all one had to do was look at how they approached each other.
When the final round bell rang, Adesanya and Romero, both clearly frustrated, went chest to chest and had to be separated by refree Miragliotta as the crowd booed them.
The judges scored the five-round fight 48-47, 48-47, 49-46 in favour of Adesanya, though the judges’ result was booed by the crowd who felt the Cuban should not have lost.
Adesanya did outland Romero in three of the five rounds: the second, third and fourth, according to UFC Stats.
Despite his peculiar tactics of doing next to nothing, Romero after the fight said fans had paid to see a real fight and not watch someone run.
“People actually paid the pay-per-view to see the good fight, not like this."
"You want to see running, go see Usain Bolt. You need to have respect for people".... Romero said.
The 42-year-old Romero (13-5) has lost three straight. He has not won a fight since 2018. Romero, 42, won the freestyle wrestling silver medal in the 2000 Summer Olympics.
Adesanya speaking in an interview to ESPN after the fight says;
“As long as the judges didn’t listen to the crowd, I was fine,”
"Romero said it was “my victory.” The fans, who cheered him following the decision, seemed to agree."
"It was a hard fight, but I did what I had to do, He [Romero] is going to be limping because I fucked his leg up. He touched me in the first round, but that was going to be the hardest shot he could land on me and after that, i knew i could take his best shot. His legs don't lie, I talked him apart to win the fight".... Concluded the 30-year-old Nigerian.
The victory for Adesanya, means that he becomes the fastest to 8-0 in modern UFC history (755 days), breaking Silva’s record of 850. The eight-fight winning streak is the longest active winning streak at middleweight and tied for the third longest in division history.
He remain undefeated, as he has fought a total of 19 fights in his mixed martial art career, winning all, 14 by knock-out and 5 by decision.
According to reports, Adesanya made a disclosed guarantee of $500,000 for the fight, while Romero made at least $300,000, according to purses obtained from the Nevada State Athletic Commission.
